The inaugural Acumen Commercial Property Awards were held at The Grand Hotel in Brighton last week. A widespread of Brighton”s property professionals gathered to celebrate and reward achievement in and around Brighton over the past year. With awards for Best Development, Best Refurbishment, Most innovative workspace, Sustainable Workplace and Building of the Future up for grabs.
The battle for the Sustainable Workspace award was between the business hub at Port ZED – Boho Green & Bill Dunster”s scheme at Shoreham Port and QED”s The Offices @ 10 Fleet Street close to Brighton station. And the winner is……..I am pleased to say Judge Duncan Baker Brown of BBM Architects awarded QED the award for 2012. In his decision he said “At first glance this modest, almost everyday, project may not seem particularly noteworthy. However, on closer inspection it provides an excellent exemplar that could influence the commercial fit out and retrofit market” Having been intimately involved in this project it is great to gain recognition to what has been achieved. Moving towards developing in a more sustainable manner is not all about grand schemes (although I do hope Port Zed is given the chance to go ahead and show what can be done when you have a blank sheet of paper), it is also about the small everyday deliverable projects. Continually improving, learning how to reduce waste, embodied energy and in-use energy consumption and ultimately helping developments stack up financially.
