Located in the Oxford central conservation area, at the southern end of one of Oxford’s main thoroughfares, this development of a derelict pub/restaurant into student residential accommodation was welcomed by the local authority

The bespoke development, built for Bellerby’s College, preserved and refurbished the existing frontage building and integrated it with a more contemporary development towards the rear of the narrow city centre site.

A simple design focused on airtightness, a good building fabric, the materials used and the predicted in-use energy consumption. Access to natural daylight was maximised and solar shading developed to prevent summer overheating.

A post occupancy evaluation revealed high levels of user satisfaction with the building finishes, service provided by the developer, acoustic performance, safety and security together with good energy performance.

"The building is very well insulated and does not overheat in summer. Its acoustic performance is excellent with no complaints regarding outside noise, even from the occupants of the rooms at the front of the building that overlooks one of the major roads in the city."
